What is the scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a Government-backed grant, run by Ofgem, that helps homeowners in England and Wales swap fossil fuel heating for a modern, low carbon heat pump.

The grant comes straight off the price of your installation. No income test, no means test and nothing to pay back.

How much is the grant worth?

£7,500 off the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump
£9,000 if your home is off the gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG, available until 31 March 2027

The grant is paid directly to your installer and deducted from your bill, so you never have to claim it back yourself.

Who can apply?

You could be eligible if:

You own the property, whether it’s your main home, a second home or a property you rent out
The property is in England or Wales
You’re replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system, such as gas, oil or LPG
Your property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air and uses it to heat your home and hot water through your radiators or underfloor heating. It works even when it’s cold outside, down to temperatures well below freezing.

For every unit of electricity it uses, a heat pump produces around three to four units of heat, making it far more efficient than a traditional gas, oil or LPG boiler. Heat pumps are built to last around 20 years with very little maintenance.
